How I Found Meaning in Life

michigan upper peninsula refuge

When I was a teen, I stopped believing in God because I was angry with Him for allowing so much emotional pain in my life. When I entered art school it felt like the weight of the world was on my shoulders because of the high expectations I placed on myself. Even though I had friends I felt very alone. When I was younger I had been accustomed to getting a lot of attention for being the best artist in my school. Once I entered college I discovered that I was no longer the best. The praise that had boosted my sense of self-worth became almost non-existent, so I wanted to quit college, but didn't know what to do with my life. Though I never would have committed suicide, thoughts of escaping and ending it all passed through my mind.

I had never heard about God being so real and powerful in our time. I wanted to know this loving God.

So I told God I wanted to turn away from my sinful ways and follow Jesus from now on. I believed that Christ's death on the cross paid the price for my sin so I could be made blameless before God and have eternal life. I said my life was His and poured out my heart to Him. God was listening.
house sparrow in flight Within a couple of days my depression disappeared and I was surprised by my newfound optimism. I no longer felt alone in the world. God had miraculously transformed my outlook on life. I actually wanted to go back to college. I joined a Bible honoring church that taught me what it means to be a genuine Christian. They welcomed me as part of their family. God's love filled me and healed my heart and I learned true freedom through forgiveness toward others.

The Lord has shown me over the years that our well-being is far more important to Him than anything we can accomplish. A balanced life is a healthy life. So whatever tasks we embark upon can be done, not with the fear and constant pressure of having to prove ourselves to be worthwhile, but with the joy of exploring the world around us and seeking to benefit others.

If you are interested in learning more about Christianity and Jesus Christ, reading Romans and John's Gospel in the Bible are good places to start. If you need to build your faith in God's love for you, the book of Psalms can be very comforting to read. Attending a church that faithfully teaches the Bible, promotes holy living and provides good opportunities to get to know and serve others is vital for growing as a christian.

Understanding a few scriptures from Romans and calling to Jesus in prayer for salvation can help anyone know Him as Lord and Savior:

"...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus." (3:23-24)
"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (6:23)
"That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." (10:9) (All quotes from The New International Version Bible)
